Phillip Phillips has made history.

The Season 11 champion finished at number-two on the Digital Songs chart this week, as the single "Home" was downloaded 278,000 times, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its the biggest sales week for any winner's coronation single since SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.

Moreover, it's the second-best digital sales week EVER for any American Idol contestant at any time, trailing only Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," which debuted with 280,000 downloads.

Phillips' achievement is also the fourth most impressive debut of 2012, placing behind Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" (521,000), Maroon 5's "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa (493,000) and Katy Perry's "Part of Me" (411,000).

The singer will soon be celebrating in a hospital bed, however. Once a high fever comes down, he is scheduled to undergo surgery in order to cure a kidney ailment. We wish him a speedy recovery!

Obama's health care aid to small firms disappoints

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Many small businesses struggle to afford health insurance for their workers, but a a new tax credit meant to help them seems to be turning into a disappointment.

Although opinion polls show the credit is one of the most popular ideas in President Barack Obama's health care law, only 170,300 businesses out of a pool of as many as 4 million potentially eligible claimed it in 2010, about 4 percent.

A recent government report found the tax credit time-consuming to apply for and not rewarding enough to be financially attractive.

That's put the Obama administration in the awkward position of asking Congress to help fix the problems by allowing more businesses to qualify and making it simpler to apply. But Republicans who run the House say they want to repeal what they deride as "Obamacare," not fix its flaws.

"They completely missed the target on this thing," Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo., said of the tax credit. "I don't think expanding it is going to make any difference whatsoever." Graves chairs the House Small Business Committee.

It doesn't help the administration's plea that the biggest small-business lobbying group is a lead plaintiff asking the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act. The National Federation of Independent Business isn't likely to spend much time tinkering with the tax credit or promoting it to members.

Small businesses represent the crumbling edge of the nation's system of employer-based health care. Only about 30 percent of companies with fewer than 10 workers offer health coverage, and they often pay more for insurance than large businesses. The credit, which once had support from lawmakers of both parties, was supposed to help businesses already providing coverage afford the premiums. Maybe it would even entice some to start.

"We agree it is not a panacea for all costs," said John Arensmeyer, founder of Small Business Majority, an advocacy group that supports the health care law and disagrees with the much larger independent business federation. The problem is all the negative publicity around the health care law has discouraged business owners from applying for the credit, he says.

"There has been more heat than light shone on this," Arensmeyer said. "There is no reason why small businesses shouldn't be taking advantage of this credit." About 770,000 workers were covered by the businesses claiming the credit in 2010.

The administration says word is finally getting out, and it expects the number of companies claiming the credit for 2011 to more than double, reaching 360,000 businesses.

A recent report by Congress' nonpartisan Government Accountability Office identified several problems with the program.

To begin with, the GAO said, the tax credit is structured so its biggest benefits go to very small companies paying low wages. About 4 out of 5 such businesses don't offer coverage, and the tax credit is not sufficient to encourage them to start doing so.

"Small employers do not likely view the credit as a big enough incentive to begin offering health insurance," the report said.

The average credit claimed in 2010 was about $2,700, although some companies qualified for much more.

Many small firms did not qualify because they paid fairly decent wages. The GAO report quoted an unidentified tax preparer who explained that "people get excited that they're eligible and then they do the calculations and it's like the bottom just falls out of it and it's not really there." It's almost a bait and switch.

Complexity has been another obstacle. IRS Form 8941, which employers must complete to claim the credit, has 25 lines and seven worksheets, the GAO said. Some tax preparers told the agency it took clients from two to eight hours to pull together supporting information and tax professionals another three to five hours to calculate the credit.

Trying to help, the IRS identified "three simple steps" employers needed to follow, but the GAO found "the three steps become 15 calculations, 11 of which are based on seven worksheets, some of which request multiple columns of information."

Arensmeyer said claiming the credit will be simpler once it becomes standard in tax-preparation software.

If the health care law withstands Supreme Court scrutiny, more employers could start claiming the credit. Even so, time is running short. After 2014, the credit is only available for two years. It may just go down as a missed opportunity, for policymakers and small-business owners alike.

With the relentless flash of a strobe light and some on-board number crunching, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft cleared two more significant milestones Thursday in the company's effort to become the first commercial launch service to carry cargo to the International Space Station.

Appearing like a gnat silhouetted against the brilliance of Earth's cloud tops, Dragon passed within 1.5 miles of the station's underside in a test of its ability to receive data from the space station on the station's position ? determined by Global Positioning System satellites ? and accurately determine the distance and relative positions between the two craft.

In addition, space-station flight engineer Andr? Kuipers activated a strobe light on Dragon, showing that the station crewmembers could command the cargo craft from their enviable perch in the multiwindowed cupola on the station ? in essence the station's control tower for overseeing the arrival and departure of spacecraft from station partners.

SpaceX already is under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 cargo missions through 2015. But the company has its sights set on more than rations and experiment samples.?A successful cargo service also paves the way for sending humans into space.

The company currently is one of four firms in which NASA is investing almost $270 million to develop human-spaceflight capabilities in the second phase of its commercial-crew development project. NASA is relying on commercial providers to ferry crews and cargo to and from the space station so that the agency can focus its human-spaceflight efforts on exploring space beyond low-Earth orbit, the space station's domain.

SpaceX's entry into that competition is a human-rated version of the Falcon 9 rocket, which lofted Dragon, and the Dragon craft. SpaceX designed Dragon from the outset to ferry people as well as petri dishes.

Thursday's activities would have wrapped up this mission in a sequence of three demonstration flights NASA originally envisioned for SpaceX. Efforts to dock with the station would have been the third mission. But the company was able to show that the two missions could be combined.

The intense preparations appear to have paid off so far. NASA and SpaceX have worked together on this mission for five years and began joint simulations nearly three years ago, notes John Couluris, SpaceX's mission director for this flight. The pace picked up during the past 18 months, with NASA and SpaceX conducting nearly 20 joint simulations and the company conducting more than 40 internally.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) ? Hate speech doesn?t begin to describe it, an Albuquerque teenager is accused of sending hundreds of anti-Semitic text messages to a fellow student who is Jewish. Most of them reading ?kill Jews, heil Hitler?.

The victim?s mother says the teen has been bullying her son for a few years now, and it finally came to a head last weekend when her son?s phone was flooded with text messages.

?I felt like I was living in 1939 in Nazi Germany,? said the mother, who asked not to be identified.

She was shocked when her 14-year-old son showed her his cell phone full of hateful messages.

?All together there were almost 18 hundred text messages that came to him over a period of weeks,? said the freshman?s mother.

The messages refer to the teen as a ?Jew fag?.

?I called Eldorado High School and they had me connected with a police officer within about 10 seconds who took care of it literally within 5 to 10 minutes,? the mother said.

The police report says the bully, who is not being named, confessed to ?text bombing? the victim. That?s a phone app that lets you send the same message to someone hundreds of times as an annoyance.

Workers at Pilgrim nuclear plant in Plymouth to vote on new union contract

Members of the company that runs a Plymouth nuclear plant and the union representing some of its workers agreed Saturday to present a four-year pay and benefits package to union members for a vote, officials said.

The vote is expected to occur next Saturday, according to a statement from Entergy Corp., which owns the nuclear plant. The proposed contract would apply to approximately 240 of the plant?s 650 workers, said Rob Williams, Entergy Corp. spokesman.

The two sides also agreed to keep the current contract in effect until midnight on June 5.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Friday it had decided to extend the plant?s license e nuclear plant to produce energy for another 20 years.

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood and a military man close to ousted leader Hosni Mubarak courted defeated first-round candidates in Egypt's presidential election on Saturday, each trying to claim the mantle of the uprising before a run-off next month.

State television said the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi led this week's vote with 26.4 percent, against 23 percent for ex-air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, according to preliminary results.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a secular leftist came a close third with 21.5 percent, followed by independent Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh. Only the top two go to the deciding vote on June 16 and 17. Official first-round results are expected on Tuesday.

But Sabahy's lawyer said he would demand that the electoral committee halt the election until alleged voting irregularities had been investigated and until the constitutional court rules on whether Shafiq was legally eligible to stand.

"We have information that conscripts voted illegally," Sabahy told a raucous crowd of supporters outside his campaign headquarters late on Saturday. "We will not give up the rights of Egyptians."

The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have wrestled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.

They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes for change ignited by last year's uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into the uncertainties of experimenting with Islamic rule.

"Bread, freedom and social justice," cried the heaving crowd as Sabahy spoke and "The revolution is still on the street".

A young man kissed a baby held in its mother's arms and said: "The revolution was for you. We did it for you and we won't give it up easily".

The Brotherhood invited Sabahy, Abol Fotouh and other politicians for talks to canvas support before the runoff, but both Abol Fotouh and Sabahy made clear they would not attend.

Abol Fotouh, who had previously appeared to throw his weight behind the Brotherhood, to which he once belonged, said he would not start bargaining with the group over government positions.

"We seek to build a consensus that confronts the (Mubarak-era) remnants, but that also achieves the demands of the revolution and a project for a nation that accommodates all Egyptians with justice," he tweeted. "Clearly we will not be part of deals on distributing (government) posts."

A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, had said the talks would discuss the vice presidency and a coalition government.

Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", the Brotherhood said parties that backed the anti-Mubarak revolt must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".

The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.

WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?

Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference in which he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's revolt. For many, he represents everything they want changed.

"Your revolution was stolen," Shafiq told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."

He said "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let Egypt "drown in chaos".

Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.

"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," Shafiq declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."

On Friday he told Egyptian television he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.

The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.

But the military, the source of all Egypt's past presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence, preferably enshrined in a new constitution. Political wrangling has held up the drafting process, so the next president will take office not knowing his powers or those of parliament and government.

Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman they feel the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.

Although Mursi topped the poll, his score was unimpressive compared to the Brotherhood's performance in the parliamentary election in which it gained nearly half the seats.

WOOING RIVALS

Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.

"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think-tank.

Some of the potential partners in an anti-Shafiq front will demand a political price.

The secular Justice Party, formed after last year's uprising, expressed "deep sorrow" at the result and set tough terms for the Brotherhood to win its support in the run-off.

It demanded a presidential system, whereas the Brotherhood favors a stronger parliament, called for a secular vice-president and said the Islamist movement must formally register itself for the first time in its 84-year-old history.

Long a thorn in Mubarak's side, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.

Trust in the Brotherhood eroded further when it reversed a pledge to stay out of the presidential race. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a smear campaign.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center was among several foreign and local organizations that monitored the first-round vote, said procedures appeared to have been fair.

"I have confidence in this process, despite the fact that it's been confused on occasion," he told a news conference.

However, the Center's preliminary report noted some procedural irregularities and lack of secrecy for voters in some polling stations.

"The election authorities prohibited access (for monitors) to the final aggregation of national results, undermining the overall transparency of the process," it added.

British businessman dies in suspected crocodile attack in India

The body of one of two Britons who went missing after setting out to canoe along a crocodile-infested river in India has been found by a search team.

Ian Turton's body was located four days after he was reported missing and two days after his abandoned canoe was discovered. His friend, Michael Easton, is still missing.

The cause of death remains unclear, but it is feared the two men were attacked by at least one of the reptiles as they negotiated the Cauvery River near Bangalore. Searchers are continuing to hunt for Mr Easton, who comes from London.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonweath Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national while on an excursion on the Cauvery River. Another British national is still missing."

Mr Turton, from York, worked for US company Tenneco Automotive in India.

Sandro Paparelli, the company's vice-president, said: "Ian was a valued member of our advanced manufacturing and engineering team. He was a much appreciated colleague and leaves many friends all over the Tenneco world.

"We are all profoundly saddened by this tragic loss of life and extend our deepest sympathies to Ian's family and friends."

Superintendent Kaushlendra Kumar, of the police team in charge of the hunt, said signals from at least one mobile phone carried by the pair stopped at 4.15pm on Saturday. He added: "They had an inflatable boat and lifejackets with them, so it is clear they were prepared to be cruising on the river."

At least one report suggested that their canoe had been found with holes in it caused by crocodile bites, in a gorge notorious for having a high number of the reptiles with a reputation for attacking people in boats.

Mr Turton's brother, Nigel, said before the discovery of the body: "He is always up to something.

"He has been all over the world on different adventures."
